Google Assembly

Today, Year 5 had our Google assembly all about AI. We learnt about where we can find AI and the exciting things that we use AI to do, such as creating images and text, generating ideas and summarising topics. Then, we heard that AI can learn from data and so can be very useful, but it is not always right and can sometimes hallucinate (get things wrong). We know that AI is a tool we can use, but it isn’t a person and doesn’t have feelings even if the way things are written seem like someone talking to us. It is really important to ask adults if we are unsure and to only use tools made for children. What did you learn Year 5?

Turning Disability into possibility

Today, Year 5 had an exciting workshop where Bart Gee told us his life story and how he has overcome the challenges he faced due to his disability! When he was younger, he was told he wouldn’t be able to walk, yet he proved people wrong by learning to walk with the help of his mum. He also takes part in many sporting events like swimming, table tennis, running and cycling. He has even completed a triathlon several times where he had to run, swim and cycle!

Also, he proved people wrong when he learnt the piano, even though doctors said he would never have enough strength in his fingers to play! He played some brilliant music for us to listen to as well. Bart has shown true resilience throughout his life, never giving up even when things got hard. With support from his family and friends, he learnt that he could take on any challenge as long as he never gave up.

We discussed the games we play online and who we might be interacting with. It is important to remember age ratings for games and not speak to people that we don’t know.

We were reminded that AI tools are there to help us with questions we have but they are not humans, AI does not have any emotions or feelings! Finally, we talked about making sure we share things with trusted adults so that we can stay safe and healthy. What did you learn in the workshop, Year 5?

Black History Month

October is Black History Month in the UK, an event that has been celebrated nationwide for more than 30 years. It was originally founded to recognise the contributions that people of African and Caribbean backgrounds have made to the UK over many generations. Now, Black History Month has expanded to include the history of not just African and Caribbean people but all black people. Many people take the time to do research into their backgrounds or find out more about black people who have made a difference to the UK but it is important to remember and celebrate these achievements all year round.
