Art

This half term in Art, Year 5 are learning about Islamic art and designing mosaics. At the beginning of the half term, we researched our artist for this topic Ranaaz Shahid. Then we researched some traditional Islamic art and learnt about the three main features of Islamic art: geometric shapes, calligraphy and floral patterns. Next, we have been replicating symmetrical mosaics and finally designing our own mosaic on our own and in groups, ready to make some of our designs in an exciting workshop in a few weeks time. What have you learnt so far Year 5?

We had our final workshop from Fort Alice. We learnt today all about rules and laws and how this relates to healthy relationships. We recapped some laws in the UK and talked about the age of criminal responsibility. Next, we learnt about the difference between rules and laws. We learnt that laws are rules where if you break them there are legal consequences that are decided by governments. Then we learnt about Jamie’s story. We learnt about how domestic abuse can impact people’s behaviour in school and how important it is to talk to trusted adults when we are worried.

Today, in art, we designed our own mosaic. I found it a bit tricky because we had to make them symmetrical (the same on both sides). My mosaic that I designed was very detailed and the colours were complementary and were very bright.

In art, we are learning to make and colour mosaics! In this lesson, we created and coloured our mosaics and we of course had to make them symmetrical.

Today was the best day ever because we were drawing symmetrical mosaics where it had to be the same on both sides and then we coloured it in the same colours on both sides, based on our Islamic art topic.

I have learned that Islamic art is patterns that have to be symmetrical on both sides and they have geometric shapes to make mosaics. Ranaaz Shahid is a very famous artist that does Islamic art and makes very complicated but really fascinating art!
