Today Year 5 had our third workshop from Fort Alice. First, we learnt about stereotyping. We created our own character called Sam, decided whether they were a boy or girl and described them. We then talked about the assumptions that we made about boys or girls when we described Sam. Then we talked about different jobs that men and women can do and learnt that women and men can do any job. Next, we talked about how domestic abuse can affect anyone and the impact it has for everyone involved in the situation. We had a discussion about the different types of domestic abuse: physical, verbal, financial, emotional, honour based violence, coercive control and forced marriage. Then we listened to Emma’s story and discussed how important it is to tell trusted adults. What did you learn Year 5?

I learnt that whenever there is a really dangerous thing happening or you need help immediately you should always tell a trusted adult or call 999. You should NEVER not tell someone about the horrible things happening, you always need to tell a trusted adult for anything that is worrying you! We also learnt about gender stereotypes and how you can do any jobs, even if you are a man and you want to do dancing and when you are a woman and you want to be a barber. Your gender doesn’t matter when choosing a job!
