First Assembly in 2H!

Today was our class assembly all about materials.

We had a fantastic time performing to all the KS1 children and our parents to show them how much we have learned about our science topic. We even got to dress up and pretend we were real life scientists!

Well done 2H! You all did a fantastic job and made me very PROUD! ūüôā

The farm at Oxford Grove!

Today we had a visit from Farmer David who brought some of his farm animals as part of our first Smiley Reward.

We had the chance to feed and stroke: chickens, goats, alpacas and sheep.

Thank you so much Miss Harvey. We are so excited for our next Smiley Reward :).

What a Year


What an  amazing year we have had this year. I cant  believe how busy we have been and how much learning we have packed in to our time in Year One.

We have celebrated lots of festivals and investigated many new things. We have researched and read and had fun with our friends. We have worked on our resilience and developed a strong sense of pride in all that we do an d set out to do in  the future.

We cant wait to take the next step in our adventure and see what fun Year Two brings.

Smiley Reward

This morning we took part in  mini golf for our Summer 1 smiley reward. We had lots of fun working in teams to  try and get a hole in one!

We are now working really hard to earn a gold award from Miss Harvey!

Our science topic is all about humans and animals. We have learned to classify animals into groups. We learned that humans are mammals. We have also looks at other groups and learned that animals with wings and feathers are called birds. We looked at birds that you could find in the U.K. and thought about their features.


We took advantage of the lovely Spring weather and went outside to spot some birds nests. We thought about bird’s habitats and what materials they used to build their nests. We used the materials on the field to build our own nests.

We have been very busy in our computing lessons making sprites move and designing our own screen savers! We have been using 2code to help us and Mrs Bevin has been very impressed!

Earlier this week we have been using the 2graph software to do some cross curricular learning about transport and the number of wheels.

Wow Writing



We have been learning about lots of different Fairy tale stories over the last few weeks and we have enjoyed them all but our favourite has been The Three Billy Goats Gruff.

We used the blurb and the front cover of the book to make some predictions and then we read the story and re enacted it with our super acting skills.

Once we had a good understanding of the story we chose our favourite character , the troll to do some descriptive writing. We used thesauruses to make our writing exciting and we shared ideas with others to produce some fabulous writing.

Boot Camp Smiley Reward

This morning the military army boot camp came to school for our Spring Term smiley reward! We got ourselves warmed up and got to race against each other on the inflatables! We had lots of fun!

Life Caravan

We have been very lucky this week to visit the life education caravan. We looked at the importance of looking after our bodies and all of the healthy foods and drinks we use to fuel it. We learned about the importance of exercise and also the importance of sleep!

Trip the Transport Museum

Today Year 1 had a trip to the Transport Museum in Bury. Our History topic this half term is all about transport so it was great to see all the old buses, cars, trams and engines.

Diving into Good Books

In Year One we love to read books from our class library every morning. We have really enjoyed reading books written by Julia Donaldson as she is our class author. Year One love “The Highway Rat” and “What the Ladybird Heard”. Finlay even brought in the sequel so we could share “What the Ladybird Head Next” with the rest of the class!

We have discovered so many different Authors during our time spent in Year One and Story Time is one of our favourite parts of the day.

This week we are celebrating World Book Day and are going to be doing lots of fun activities linked to some of our favourite stories.

Let’s Investigate

Before half term we set up an investigation to see how much rainfall falls during a week in the season of winter. We made some rain gauges and placed them on our school fence so that they could collect the rain water.

We all made a prediction of how many millilitres (ml) of rain would have been collected over the week of half term and today we went to go and take some recordings.

We enjoyed using out maths skills to measure and record our findings.

Safer Internet Day

At Oxford Grove we always think carefully before we go online. We know that there are things online that can make us happy and things online that can make us sad.


We have been making faces to show and share with our friends that happy things we can do on the internet and what to do if we see something that makes us sad.

We learned about a set of monster friends who posted online their entry to a competition. Lots of people were posting nice comments but one person posted something mean and it upset the monsters. The monsters told an adult and the adult was able to help them get it sorted out.

Practical Maths

This week in maths we have been learning how to find half of a number.

We know that we need to share into 2 groups equally.

We also worked out that doubling is the opposite of halving and we can use our doubles to help us to halve numbers quickly.

Weather Watchers

We have been keeping our eye on the weather this half term as we are learning all about it in our geography and science lessons.

We have watched real life snowflakes fall from the sky this week and definitely seen our fair share of raindrops.

Science and Seasons

We have been learning all about the four seasons in Science.

The season now is Winter. It is cold in winter.

We worked out that it was 3 degrees today and  used the internet to work out the temperature for the rest of the week using the weather forecast.

We decided that it was best to wear our hats and scarfs while the weather is so cold.

Sports Assembly

Year One were amazing in their sports assembly this week.

We had lots of children trying so hard in their races. The bean bag race was the favourite of Mrs Bevin.

We had to collect the bean bags and get them into the hoop before sprinting right down to the finish line.

Super Scientists

Our topic this half term is all about materials.

We need to find out what material would be best for the three pigs to build their houses from.

We started by researching lots of materials in our DT lessons, we looked at whether a material was soft or hard.

We decided why the materials were used to make objects around the classroom.

Military Fitness Smiley Reward

We have had so much fun with the military this week.

We have been doing all kinds of different exercise to keep us fit and healthy and learning all about resilience which means we must never give up even when things get tough.

We are Poets

Today a real life poet came to join us. He was called Matt Goodfellow and we had so much fun listening to and joining in with his performance poems.

Later on we were extra lucky because Mr Goodfellow came to help us write some of our own poetry.

We played on the playground for 5 minutes which gave us the inspiration that we needed to write our poem.

Maths is Everywhere

This week we have been conducting a transport survey as part of our Topic learning about our school grounds.

We used our super data handling skills to collect the information and put it in to a table. Later this afternoon  we made some block graphs on the computer.

We have been doing lots of wonderful writing in year 1, based on a book by our class author called ‚ÄėThe Gruffalo‚Äô. We have been writing about the characters as well as the settings and have been trying hard to remember capital letters, full stops and finger spaces.
