Since we got back to school from our lovely Christmas break, we have started a new history topic – The Maya Civilisation.

Most of us had never even heard of this time period, this group of people and their culture. So far we have learned all about where they came from, and imagined what their life would be like by looking at pictures and researching using non-fiction.

We have also linked this to our art topic, by researching art from different cultures including the Maya Civilisation. We are going to be focussing on masks, and eventually make our own Mayan mask!

What would you like to know about this part of history 5L?

Maddi must feel like she is in her element. Maddi learned that her ancestors were Maya and she was very quick to go away and read up on the Maya, she was tasked with researching what they wear, what they eat, their belief’s etc…

Maddi, what have you learnt that you didn’t already know?

I asked Maddison at the end of our first session if I had managed to teach her anything new… I am very pleased and glad that she said yes! Maddison is a fantastic help during our history lessons this term – I might have to start paying her! 😉

The Maya Civilization is so fascinating and is so different to other history topics. The Maya people were extremely religious and loved playing and watching games, they made their own writing and number system. Some Maya people would sacrifice themselves for their gods because they believed the gods lived off blood.
